Evidence-based IOL planning
ABOUT
By Dr. Dante Buonsanti
IOL Assistant helps organize biometric data, formula outputs, and indexed literature into a clear clinical workflow for cataract planning.
The application supports ophthalmologists during IOL planning by structuring case data, surfacing relevant literature, showing the possibility of refractive surprise, and presenting recommendation logic in a readable format, among other capabilities.

Retrieves and displays literature relevant to the selected formula and recommendation context.
๐ฌ
Supports case review with contextual follow-up questions tied to the current recommendation and evidence.
Constant updates are being made to improve IOL selection. As evidence grows, AI improves, and cases are submitted, the assistant will refine personalized recommendations. Many new features are being worked on.
Formula selection is based on biometric context together with indexed literature relevant to formula accuracy and prediction error.
Power selection is based on the option whose predicted refraction is closest to the target refraction for the eye being analyzed. The target refraction can be modified.
We believe that most of the time more than one formula is suitable, but showing only one is intended to help with final IOL power selection.
DISCLAIMER
IOL Assistant is a clinical decision-support tool. Final surgical planning and lens selection remain the responsibility of the treating physician.

On a mission to improve post-refractive cataract outcomes as much as possible, I came up with tools such as the ESCRS IOL Calculator, ioloptimization.com, and toricaligner.com, together with the help of outstanding colleagues, to whom I'm more than grateful.
Now working with a team of AI and IT specialists for IOL Assistant. I also have publications in major journals. I hope you find this tool interesting and helpful for your clinical guidance. Feedback is more than welcome.
